Scrutinizing Giant Tesla Recall | Finansavisen

--

In December, Tesla had to recall over 2 million cars in the US due to a fault with the autopilot function, in what became the electric car giant’s biggest recall ever.

Now the transport authorities in the USA have opened an investigation to investigate whether Tesla’s improvements are good enough, writes Reuters.

According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an agency under the country’s Ministry of Transport, they have reportedly received several reports of accidents in which the Tesla cars’ driver assistant was in use. These must have had the software updated.

Acknowledged problem

The agency quotes Tesla as saying that the car owners must activate the new software in the car themselves, and that they can easily deactivate it, which they believe is problematic. In the past, NHTSA has asked the automaker to take additional measures to make the drivers who use the Autopilot function more aware, and so that they are not able to abuse it.

The huge recall concerned the Y, X, S, 3 and Cybertruck models in the US. In addition, 1.6 million cars have been recalled in China due to the same problem.

Tesla acknowledged in December that the autopilot function was not sufficiently secured to prevent misuse by drivers, which could increase the risk of an accident.
