If you are an Amazon customer in the US, you no longer need a mobile phone or card.

The One app analyzes the palms

For Amazon One has been launched with an app that scans one or both palms so that you can pay only by letting a scanner analyze the details of the palm in the shops. When the service was first announced in 2022, you had to physically visit a store. Whole Foods, Panera Bread and 150 other non-Amazon stores are supported — locations include stadiums, airports, gyms and grocery stores.

Amazon One was developed using generative AI to create synthetic palm images. This was crucial for training our machine learning models. AI also powers our latest innovation—the ability to match a camera phone image with near-infrared images from an Amazon One device—while maintaining high accuracy and security. When a customer who signed up for Amazon One via the app holds their palm over an Amazon One device for the first time, our AI system is able to compare and match images of the palm and veins captured by the Amazon One device with the camera phone image, and first at this point the registration is considered complete.

Amazon

“Amazon One has been used more than 8 million times, and over 80 percent of customers who use Amazon One in Amazon and Whole Foods Market stores choose to use the service repeatedly,” Amazon reports in connection with the launch of the app.

Amazon says the system has 99.9999 accuracy, and explains how they verify by reading vectors: “Amazon One looks at both your palm and its underlying vein structure to create a unique numerical vector representation – called a palm signature – for identity matching. To ensure that Amazon One continues to deliver the same accuracy, our AI innovation compares vector representations of the palm from the Amazon One app with the vector representation of palm and vein images from an Amazon One device. This allows us to verify that the person holding their palm over the Amazon One device is the same person who signed up for the service with the app.”

The images are encrypted and sent to a “secure Amazon One domain in the AWS cloud,” Amazon explains, adding:

“To maintain our high standards of customer privacy and data security, these images cannot be downloaded or stored on your phone, and the mobile app includes multiple layers to stop false detection. Customers love the convenience of Amazon One, and retailers and other businesses appreciate the fast, seamless and secure experience it provides.”
