In recent months, there have been rumors that Embracer Group wanted to sell off Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment. Now the Swedish giant has found a buyer, namely Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive.

In a press release, Take-Two says that it is taking over Gearbox for 460 million dollars. This corresponds to almost five billion kroner. Embracer bought Gearbox in 2021, for around NOK 13 billion.

With the agreement, Take-Two secures the rights to all of Gearbox’s game series. It includes Borderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem, as well as future games.

Gearbox is currently working on six “important projects in interactive entertainment”, writes Take-Two. Five of these are sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld series. The last of the six games is a completely new game series that Gearbox has not yet said anything about.

This is by no means the first time Gearbox and Take-Two have worked together. The latter has been the publisher, via 2K, of several Borderlands games. The two companies are also working together on the upcoming Borderlands movie.

– Joining forces with Take-Two Interactive and 2K will help Gearbox reach new heights. Take-Two and 2K have demonstrated time and time again that they are willing to invest in our efforts to generate creativity, joy and profit. We’ve set the bar for interactive entertainment and achieved incredible results with groundbreaking record-breaking games when we worked together remotely as partners. I’m really excited about what we can achieve now that we’re officially joining forces, said Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.
