At 2:17 a.m. on Saturday, the West police district reported on X that the emergency services were on their way to Årstad in Bergen, where smoke had been reported from a residential building.

Ibsens gate was closed as a result of the incident.

– I don’t know how long the street will be closed, but at least as long as there are fire engines on site blocking the road, says operations manager in the police, Dan Erik Johannesen.

– Lifesaving efforts

At 02:35, the duty manager at 110 Vest, Trond Landaas, says that the emergency services have arrived at the scene, and that they have established that smoke is coming from the home.

– There was heavy smoke down the whole of Ibsens gate from the roof and the construction of the house when we arrived. We went straight to life-saving efforts, says fire service leader Erik Andresen to Bergensavisen at the scene.

To hospital

Operations manager Johannesen says at 02:40 that all the residents are out of the home, and that no injuries have yet been reported.

Approximately one hour later, Johannesen states that six people have been evacuated from the address, and that a man in his 50s has been taken to hospital for a check-up. This is because he was exposed to smoke.

– All residents are accommodated in hotels throughout the night, says Johannesen.

The police’s incident leader at the scene, Christian Meyer, tells Bergensavisen that the six residents were naturally affected by the situation.

– It is terrible to be woken up in the middle of the night, and to be evacuated in just your underwear. Fortunately, everyone was quickly accounted for by the fire service, he says.
