A criminal case has been opened against Zelenskyj, shows an update of the wanted database on Saturday. The Ministry of the Interior does not provide any details about what the president will be accused of.

The Russian authorities have not said anything about why Zelenskyj has now ended up on the list. For the president, there are no direct consequences as he is not on Russian soil.

Ukraine: – This proves the desperation

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out that the President of Russia himself is wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court ICC, which has 123 member states.

– This proves the desperation of the Russian state and propaganda apparatus, which will not get attention in any other way, says the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

Among the several thousand names on the Russian list of wanted criminals are several high-ranking politicians. Among them is Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.

Zelenskyi on assassination attempts

Russia has claimed that it invaded Ukraine due to alleged oppression of the Russian-speaking population of the country. The day after the invasion, President Vladimir Putin gave a speech in which he called on the Ukrainian army to depose Zelenskyi.

Zelenskyj himself claimed last year that he knows of at least “five or six” foiled assassination attempts against him.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin in March 2023. The ICC accuses Putin of being responsible for the abduction and deportation of children from Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine.
