Today it is 78 years since King Carl Gustaf of Sweden was born. The Swedish monarch’s birthday is on Tuesday, and the birthday has been marked on the royal house’s Instagram profile.

Surprising after nine years

“Today HM the King turns 78. The king was born in Haga Castle on 30 April 1946. The king’s birthday is an official flag day,” the royal house writes to a picture of Carl Gustaf.

“The King’s birthday is also an official salute day in the Armed Forces, who fire salutes from the country’s salute stations at 12.00 today”.

At the time of writing, the congratulations are flowing into the comments section, and earlier today the king’s big day was marked in Sweden. According to the Royal Palace’s website, the official program started at 11.15am.

The Swedish people have had several opportunities to see the “birthday king”, but how he celebrates the day in private is not known.

What is certain, however, is that the king, who has children Crown Princess Victoria (46), Prince Carl Philip (44) and Princess Madeleine (41) with Queen Silvia (80), will have to celebrate without his youngest daughter.

As you know, she lives in the United States.

Now it’s over

– King Carl Gustaf is used to celebrating without his youngest stepdaughter, who has lived abroad for many years. This year, however, she should have been there, says Se og Hør’s royal house expert Caroline Vagle, and continues:

– The plan was for her and her family to move home to Sweden last year, but as you know, that was postponed.

According to Vagle, however, it is now closer to home than ever before.

– So I guess the king is more happy about that than he is sad that she is not there today, says the royal house expert, and adds:

– During the summer, hopefully the whole extended family will be gathered in Sweden on a permanent basis. I’m guessing both young and old will be happy about that.
