Three police officers have been shot and killed in the city of Charlotte in North Carolina in the USA. A suspected perpetrator is also dead.

According to the AP news agency, the incident took place when the federal police force US Marshals was in the process of executing an arrest warrant on a person wanted for weapons possession.

Five other police officers are injured, one of them critically.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings, the police were fired upon as they approached a residence in a suburb. They fired back at the suspect, who was in front of the house. Eventually, the police were fired upon by people inside the house.

The person who was in front of the house has been confirmed dead, while two people who were in the house are being questioned. It concerns a woman and a 17-year-old, writes CBS.

The situation unfolded over a period of three hours.

“The heroic actions of these officers show the dangers we face every day,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg police wrote on Twitter.

– Today, some of our colleagues made the biggest sacrifice for the safety of our society.

President Joe Biden has already expressed his condolences to Governor Roy Cooper.
