The Iranian consulate in Syria’s capital was razed to the ground in the attack, which Israel, according to Syrian and Iranian media and authorities, was behind on Monday.
Iran’s ambassador to Syria says Tehran will come up with a strong response to the attack. The Iranian foreign minister describes the attack as “a violation of all international conventions”.
– “Perfect hit”
Israel, which rarely comments on individual attacks against Iranian targets in neighboring countries, has not commented on this attack either. According to Iran, the consulate, which is an annex to the country’s embassy, was attacked by six rockets fired by F35 aircraft.
According to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, seven of the force’s members, including two high-ranking generals, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike against Iran’s consulate in the Syrian capital.

She is professor of history at the University of Oslo (UiO) and senior researcher at Prio.
– Can get out of control
Henriksen Waage says it is unlikely that the two countries will attack each other directly, but that this could trigger attacks from the countries’ proxies.
– Perhaps Iran chooses to use Hezbollah in Lebanon or the Houthi militia in Yemen with harsh attacks against Israel, it could suddenly get out of control.
Henriksen Waage says the situation is more dangerous in the Middle East after the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October. She believes Iran will come up with a well-thought-out counterattack.
– What separates Iran from other actors in the Middle East is that they have more long-term plans. It may be that the clergy in Iran think that revenge is sweet. It is often difficult to know what or when they will attack, but it is absolutely clear that something will happen, says the professor.
