Masked and armed residents of a drug-infested district in Nice, France, have in recent weeks fought back against hundreds of illegal immigrants who deal in drugs and terrorize the neighborhood.

Several people have been seriously injured by, among other things, shots, bats and knives in clashes between a local militia of permanent residents from the drab town area of Moulins and foreigners without legal residence.

The illegal migrants, mostly Tunisians who have come to Italy by sea, often live in lofts and occupied apartments while they make a living from drug trafficking and commercial crime, according to Le Figaro.

There is only one problem: the permanent residents also make a living from it. It makes a fuss.

In recent days, the police have seized pistols, hammers, knives, a pump-action shotgun and a machine gun. A cell from the national security police CRS has been deployed full-time to quell the conflict.

“These riots are citizens’ rebellion against migrants who have proven to be violent, aggressive and disrespectful to our society,” says a robotic voice in a video clip shared on social media as street battles between the local militia and immigrant gangs raged.

The video continues:

“We have warned the authorities that sooner or later it will be the residents who take control of the neighborhood again,” says the robotic voice and condemns the “permissive legal system”.

In the clip, people in the neighborhood are asked to stay indoors for the next few days.

Le Figaro has spoken to the leader of the militia. He understands that people are shocked by the violence.

– But in front of you are migrants with Kalashnikovs in their hands, high on illegal substances. We couldn’t have done this in a more delicate way, he says.

– We were prepared to be shot at, not to return home alive, for the good of the district.

Tensions between the two groups have been rising for a long time. A sexual assault against a nurse is said to have been the final straw that prompted the militia to take action.

The matter must be seen in the context of the local langers’ fight for territories, the authorities believe. Many permanent residents of Moulins are also involved in the drug economy and face increasing competition from illegal immigrants who work for ringleaders.

That the drug gangs gain acceptance among ordinary people by enforcing law and order with militias is a well-known phenomenon in places where the authorities have lost control. Conditions are not yet as bad in Nice as in Marseille, but the area already has a number of no-go zones.

Illegal immigrants are behind 54 percent of all crime in the city.
