Chinese anti-doping authorities acquitted the swimmers because they believed investigations showed that the tests were exposed to so-called contamination. The explanation is that they ingested the banned substance in food during a convention.

Wada approved China’s assessment and never went public with the matter. USADA chief Travis Tygart has accused the agency of covering up for the Chinese.

In an attempt to shed light on the facts of the case, Wada has published a so-called FAQ document (answers to frequently asked questions). The content is severely criticized by USADA.

A spokesperson from Wada says that the anti-doping agency is adamant that “all regulations have been followed in the investigation of the case”.

A week ago, Wada called for an independent review of the handling of the China case, but that has not stopped the criticism.
