On the morning of January 16, 1980, 19-year-old Barbara Tucker was found dead in a wooded area near Mt. Hood Community College in the state of Oregon in the United States.

Around 7pm the night before, the police believe that she was kidnapped, sexually abused and beaten to death in a nearby car park. For 44 years, the case has remained unsolved.

Last week, however, 60-year-old Robert Plympton was found guilty of first degree murder, according to a press release from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. The charge of rape and sexual abuse was dropped.

The man denies criminal guilt.

– We will appeal, and we are sure that the sentence will be overturned, say the man’s defenders, Stephen Houze and Jacob Houze, in a statement to CNN.

Traces of the man’s DNA were found in Tucker’s vagina, according to police, who identified him in 2021.

Police began monitoring Plymton, and were able to connect him to the case by seizing a piece of chewing gum he threw on the ground. The DNA profile in the chewing gum matched that found in the victim’s vagina, according to state prosecutors.

Plympton was arrested on 8 June 2021.
