French President Emmanuel Macron is endangering Europe and is a warmonger, claims Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini from the far-right League party.

Salvini indicates that Macron will not rule out sending Western ground forces to Ukraine. The salvo against Macron came on Saturday when Salvini met with other right-wing and nationalist European leaders in Rome to prepare for EU parliamentary elections in June.

The French president’s suggestion in February that Western ground forces could be sent to Ukraine is “extremely dangerous, excessive and unbalanced,” Salvini told the meeting.

– I believe that President Macron with his words poses a danger to our country and our continent, Salvini said in the speech at the meeting, which was held under the auspices of the group Identity and Democracy (ID), the sixth largest group in the EU Parliament.

Outspoken populist

A main theme of the speech was conservative family values.

– The problem is not mums and dads, but warmongers like Macron who talk about war as if there was no problem now, said the Italian.

– I do not want to leave our child a continent that is ready to enter the third world war, he added.

The outspoken deputy prime minister, who is also transport minister, is described as an extreme populist who has repeatedly come under fire for his statements.

Navalny and Putin

Earlier in March, he commented on the Russian election results as follows: a

– When a people votes, they are always right.

After Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny died in captivity, Salvini said it was “up to Russian doctors and judges” to determine the cause of death.

Salvini has previously expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Macron has said several times in recent weeks that he does not rule out the possibility of Western ground forces being deployed in Ukraine at a later date. The statements have been rejected by a number of Western countries.
