Forced labour, copying and customs evasion are some of the things the clothing chain Shein has to answer for.

It was last week that a group of American lawmakers asked for the Chinese clothing chain Shein to be investigated, writes the news website Quartz.

– There are credible allegations about the company’s use of underpaid and forced labor in the self-governing region of Xinjiang Uyghur, the letter states.

Nectar for forced labor

In the letter, both Republican and Democratic politicians ask the Securities and Exchange Commission to independently confirm that Shein does not use forced labor before they will be allowed to launch an IPO in the United States.

Through a letter to the BBC, the clothing chain Shein gave the following response:

– We have no tolerance for forced labour.

Will be scrutinized

On Monday evening, it was announced that the US will start an investigation into the Chinese company Shein, which has its headquarters in Singapore.

In a report published by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC), Shein is blamed for sourcing cotton from Xinjiang, which is a violation of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.

The report also cites a number of lawsuits against the company. This is about copying other clothing chains with low-cost material and trying to avoid US customs and customs inspections.
