According to local authorities, the 23-year-old German had returned from a night on the town, only to find he had locked himself out.

This prompted the young German to go up to the hotel’s roof terrace on the tenth floor and from there climb to the hotel room.

But he lost his footing and plunged several meters down.

The rescue service arrived quickly, but the German’s life could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The German had arrived in Mallorca a few hours before the fatal accident, which will now be investigated further.

The fatal accident from the balcony marked the first of its kind in Mallorca, but the figures show that it probably won’t be the last.

Before we take a closer look at the tragic history of the tourist paradise, it is relevant to first touch on the ‘balconing’ trend, which cannot be translated into English.

This is when a person jumps into the communal pool from the balcony or tries to jump from one balcony to another.

Like other inventions with similar names, the common denominator is that it is dangerous and often leads to accidents.

In Majorca, which is a favorite tourist destination especially for party-loving Germans and Brits, large amounts of alcohol and balconies are a deadly cocktail.

Therefore, accidents often happen late at night or early in the morning, when many people are on their way to or from nightlife.

Back in 2014, a 20-year-old Dane died on a Saturday night when he fell from the fourth floor of his hotel in Magaluf on the island.

At the time, TV 2 did a count of similar accidents, where in the period 2012-2014 there were 12 falling accidents from hotels in the Magaluf area alone.

In the vast majority of cases, it is British citizens who are involved in the accidents, which peak in the middle of summer.

In the spring of 2018, before summer had even begun, 11 British tourists had fallen from balconies. And then it comes in waves year after year.
