Albini has died after a heart attack, aged 61. This is reported by the American music magazine Pitchfork.

The producer established himself as the frontman of the controversial rock band Big Black in the eighties.

In 1988, he seriously became a “back-up” name in alternative rock, after producing the Pixies’ debut album “Surfer Rosa”.

In 1993, he was behind the controls when Nirvana recorded their last album, “In Utero”. In the same year, he also received a lot of attention for the PJ Harvey record “Rid Of Me”.

Later he collaborated, among other things, with Norwegian Motorpsycho, on the album “Child Of The Future” from 2009.

Albini himself was critical of the producer title, preferring to be credited for having “recorded” records – not for having “produced” them.

His attitude was that the job was to capture the essence of the artists in the studio, not that he himself should leave too much of a mark on the music.

Equally, there was often a recognizable rough style on the albums he was involved in.
