NORTH CAROLINA, USA (Nettavisen): Judge Aileen Cannon on Tuesday postponed the federal criminal case against Donald Trump, referred to as the “document case”.

In August 2022, FBI agents searched Trump’s palace Mar-a-Lago in Florida. The agents found 13,000 documents. Some of them were top secret and contained information about the US nuclear weapons program and the military. Donald Trump denies criminal guilt.

The trial was originally supposed to start on 20 May, but has now been postponed indefinitely. This is a clear victory for Donald Trump, who does not want the criminal case to start until after the election. If he wins in November, he can pardon himself.

Cannon justified the decision by saying that there are eight petitions in the case that she must decide on. There is also a challenge around national security.

Thinks the judge is biased

But several experts are critical that Cannon has postponed the trial.

– She has not looked after the public’s interests for a single day in this case. She has been sitting in her office, apparently too paralyzed to clarify simple requests. “Unfortunately, this case will not go to trial, despite the fact that it is one of the most important cases in history and could easily have been completed before the election,” Ty Cobb, former White House counsel, told CNN.

He believes Cannon is both biased and incompetent.

– Her decisions, such as initiating a hearing on the Ministry of Justice’s team, are tragic, he says.

Cannon was appointed by Donald Trump to the role in 2020.

– I think it has always been her goal to prevent the trial from starting, adds Cobb.

I don’t think the trial will start before the election

Retired Judge Shira Scheindlin, who previously served on the United States District Court for the Southern Judicial District of New York, also accuses Cannon of dragging out the case.

– She could have decided half of the petitions already, but she postpones them all and says there are several complex issues regarding the classified documents. It’s true, but if she had done her job, there might have been three petitions left, says Scheindlin to CNN.

She does not think the trial will be held before the election on November 5.

– It is obvious to everyone that we will not hold a trial in the document case before the election, she concludes.

If Trump wins the election, he could pardon himself in the federal criminal cases.
