Sabreen al-Sakani was born by caesarean section at an Emirati hospital in Rafah shortly after midnight on Sunday. The doctors revived the baby with the use of a lung pump, but the girl died on Thursday and has been buried next to her mother, according to the British broadcaster.

The doctors at the hospital said on Monday that she was in a bad condition, but that she was getting better.

The BBC writes that she was among 16 children who were killed in airstrikes against Rafah last weekend. Sabreen was named after her mother, and her father and three-year-old sister were also killed in the attack.

All the children were killed in air raids on the block of flats where they lived, the BBC writes.

Although the announced ground invasion of Rafah has been delayed, Israeli forces carry out attacks against targets in the city almost daily. Over half of the Gaza Strip’s population of 2.3 million people have sought refuge in Rafah.

The government in Israel wants to carry out a major military operation in Rafah to crush the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip, but both the US and a large number of other countries warn against this. They fear that such an operation will make conditions for the civilian population even worse.

The war between Israel and Hamas has now been going on for over six months. According to the health authorities in the Gaza Strip, over 34,300 Palestinians have been killed, and at least two out of three of those killed were women and children.
