20 people drowned in the first quarter: – Every single accident affects families

In the first quarter of 2024, 20 people have lost their lives in drowning accidents in Norway. There are five more than at the same time last year, the rescue company’s drowning statistics show.

Among the 20 who drowned, 17 were men.

Five of the people drowned in Nordland.

Both drowning accidents in March and in total in the first quarter are the highest in eight years.

– Every single accident affects families, friends, colleagues and local communities. Both political will and teamwork between all of us who work with prevention are necessary so that fewer people drown.

That’s according to general secretary Grete Herlofson of the Rescue Society.

Eight of the 20 people who drowned in the first quarter of this year died after falling from land. The accidents occurred after fishing from shore.

Seven drowned in connection with the use of a recreational boat. Three of these drowned from the kayak, while three people lost their lives after falling into the sea between the boat and the wharf.

Eight people died in drowning accidents in Agder. There have been three drowning accidents in Vestland, two in Rogaland and one in both Østfold and Møre and Romsdal.
