(Nettavisen): The EU will have a requirement for reuse, which involves the return, washing and reuse of drink bottles, which will be more environmentally harmful than the deposit system we have today, according to Infinitum, which owns and operates the Norwegian deposit scheme, writes E24.

The requirement from the EU may lead to Norway having to have a dual system.

A system for reuse and one for recycling.

– Then we have to drive glass and metal from the shop and back to the wash and factory, and then out again. There will be much more and heavier transport. We believe that the solutions we have with deposits, including a 97 percent return rate on PET bottles, provide better environmental performance, says Terje Sletnes in NHO Mat og Drikke to E24.

In the hope of dropping this new scheme, NHO Mat og Drikke, together with its sister companies in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, have written a letter asking countries that have a well-functioning deposit scheme to drop these requirements.

– We cannot see that there are any changes there that provide exceptions to the re-use requirements. It looks dark for Norway now, says Sletnes to E24.

The new requirements will certainly lead to increased prices for consumers, says CEO and owner Christian Aass.

The grocery industries are afraid that the EU’s requirements will lead to them having to rebuild shops to make room for the safe room.

For other countries in Europe, the EU’s new requirements with more recycling solutions can be a huge plus, Sletnes believes.
