Trønderklubben moved up to the 1st division last season, where it has had a fantastic start to the season. Wednesday’s advancement in the cup also secured a new record for Levanger, who have never before progressed further than the 3rd round.

– It is impressive, very impressive. And this has not come out of nowhere. It has come through hard work, and they have been very skilled when they have had the opportunity, commented Åge Hareide on NRK:

Much of the credit for that must be attributed to surprise man Arne Gunnes.

Drama before kick-off

However, the forward should actually have started the match on the bench. In the registered starting line-up, Gabriel Andersen was listed, but he had incurred two yellow cards in the previous cup matches and was therefore suspended on Wednesday.

Gunnes thus had to be inserted into the starting eleven at the last second.

And the super reserve did not squander the opportunities. The striker, who also secured a 1-0 victory over Brann in the previous round, kicked the 1st division team into the lead after just 40 seconds. Admittedly, the lead did not last longer than a quarter of an hour before Peter Christiansen sent the teams level again.

In the second half, Gunnes made himself count again when he was pulled down by Djibril Diop and earned the Ashes a penalty. It put Sanel Bojadzic in the net behind Arild Østbø.

Equalized again

Unfortunately for Gunnes, it wasn’t to last either, because 14 minutes before full time Simen Kvia-Egeskog equalized and secured extra time for the sitdis.

There, Håvard Lorentsen and Ådne Bruseth became the big heroes when they scored Levanger’s third and fourth goals of the evening.

Two minutes after Levanger’s last goal, Diop was also sent to the shower after he stamped Bruseth on the ankle.

Earlier in the cup, Levanger knocked out Mosjøen (4-0), Stjørdals-Blink (1-0) and Brann (1-0).
