--

The case is updated.

Wierer himself confirms this at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

– It will be very tough. But I will do what I can to be prepared, says Wierer.

TV 2’s biathlon expert Tiril Eckhoff was born in the same year as Wierer and has competed with the Italian for many years. Already during the WC in Nove Mesto in February, she was relatively sure that the end was near for Wierer.

For Wednesday’s press conference Eckhoff said:

– I am quite sure that this is a goodbye, she told Dagbladet.

The Italian biathlete has for many years been the biggest star in the sport. In both the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, she won the World Cup overall.

At the joint start in the WC in Östersund in 2019, she won her first of a total of four WC golds. Almost since then, speculation has run rampant about how long she would last. After the WC on home soil four years ago, she hinted that she wanted to take a break from biathlon.

When Dagbladet met Wierer in Nove Mesto in February, she was open that she has long been delusional about her own future.

– It’s fine. I have had many job offers, but it depends on whether I am still motivated after the holidays or not. We’ll see what happens, she told Dagbladet.

A few weeks before the WC, the Italian said that she had made up her mind and that only her husband knew about the decision. According to Dagbladet’s information, this turned out not to be true.

– How is it for you to get all the questions about the future?

– It’s tiring, but I really don’t have the answer, so I can only answer that I don’t know, she told Dagbladet.

In two years, the Olympic Games will be held in Italy. The biathlon will take place in Anterselva, about a mile from Bruneck, where Wierer grew up.
