An interview created speculation about Bruno Fernandes’ future. Now Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag calms down worried fans.
Monday 6 May at 09:39– It was taken out of context. I haven’t asked him what he thought, because I know he’s a United player and very happy to be here.
That’s what Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says about Bruno Fernandes’ future at the club.
The speculation comes as a result of an interview Fernandes did with DAZN Portugal last week. The interview has been reproduced by, among others, the London Evening Standard.
– As a player, you must always want to be there. At the same time, the club must want the player. Right now I feel both parties want to continue together, Fernandes said – and continued:
– If I have to consider leaving the Premier League, it will be after the EC. Now I’m being completely honest. I don’t want to take the focus away from the FA Cup final and the EC, there is nothing more important right now.
Now, however, ten Hag guarantees that the Portuguese will stay for at least two more years. Fernandes’ contract expires in 2026, but a clause allows United to extend the contract by one year.
Fernandes has perhaps been United’s most important player since he arrived in 2020. This season he has 15 goals and nine assists in all competitions.
– Bruno stands out as an example for others. He is a real warrior. Last year, when we played Brighton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, he played with an ankle that was so swollen. It was incredible. He couldn’t run, but was still on the field, says ten Hag.
As a United player, Fernandes has the benefit of missing a game due to injury. If he has not played, it has been due to suspension, rest or illness.
– He is always available. He always delivers and gives energy to the team. Such qualities are absolutely necessary to be successful, says ten Hag.
When Manchester United face Crystal Palace on Monday night, Fernandes will probably have to play with pain again. Last week he was absent from training due to an injury to his wrist.
