Much has been about Darwin Nunez on social media after Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham. The forward came on as a substitute and didn’t make much of an impact, but still, a lot was written about Nunez on Sunday night.

The reason for that is that he has apparently chosen to delete all Liverpool-related photos on his Instagram account. The pictures that remain on the profile are either from the time in Benfica or from international matches for Uruguay. In addition, there are some pictures of the family.

It is speculated whether Nunez has chosen to delete the photos due to incitement from supporters on Instagram. In that case, it will not be the first time someone chooses to take action as a result of incitement. Cody Gakpo, Jarell Quansah and Mohamed Salah have also been the subject of a lot of rude messages in the comments section this season, and they are far from alone.

No action taken

The companies behind the most popular social media have been urged by several players to do more to shut out the worst trolls, but so far it doesn’t seem to be helping.

In April 2021, the English Football Association, the Premier League, the Football League, the Women’s Super League, the Women’s Championship, the Players’ Association, the Managers’ Association, the Referees’ Association, Kick It Out, Women in Football and the Supporters’ Association agreed on a joint boycott of social media. Then there was silence from all actors for three days as a mark against racism and incitement, but three years later little has been done to put an end to the problem.

One of the players who have recorded the same match is Andy Robertson. The Scot has chosen to shield his family from social media.

– Don’t get me wrong, I like to post things. 99% of what is commented on is positive, but it’s the last percent that stays with you when you close the app.

– People should be allowed to have opinions, and football is based on that, but to say that I should get a long-term injury is going too far, he said in 2022.

Hopefully Nunez and the others who experience harassment on social media will get the follow-up they need at Liverpool FC.
