Vålerenga – Tromsø 1-0 after extra time

Vålerenga-Captain Christian Borchgrevink told NRK about the difficult days after the victory was secured. On Sunday, VIF suffered a surprising 3-5 loss to Mjøndalen.

– I am not so proud of what we have done in recent days. We crashed into a rock wall on Sunday, and now we’re getting up. At least we fight, even if it’s not pretty, he told NRK.

Borchgrevink missed the penalty shootout against Kristiansund which caused Vålerenga to be relegated in December. It seemed to be heading for another penalty shootout, but Simen Juklerød was the match winner after 100 minutes.

– I had been looking forward to it and was going to get my revenge. I thought about it. It would actually have been nice, Borchgrevink continued.

Tromsø came to Oslo with five straight losses in the Eliteserien. The only bright spots have been two 6-0 victories in the first two cup rounds.

Opponents were Vålerenga, who also haven’t got things going after last year’s relegation. Before the match, the Oslo team had eight games without a win on their own artificial turf.

In overtime, Tromsø’s Lasse Nordås could have become the hero, but his hard shot hit the crossbar. Juklerød decided just before the clock struck 100 minutes. The wing-back took an overstepping feint in the 16-metre area before finishing beautifully in the far corner.

Tromsø got off to the best start in the capital without converting it into scoring. Vålerenga was eventually close, but the teams were the same distance at half-time. Both teams had new opportunities after the break, but the match went to extra time. There, Juklerød became the great hero.

Vålerenga meets Bryne on Saturday. Geir Bakke and co. is just one point above the relegation zone.

For Tromsø, the Vikings await away. The red and whites have struggled mightily in the start of the elite series, and it didn’t help that captain Kent-Are Antonsen had to retire with an injury on Wednesday evening.
