Former tennis world number one Garbine Muguruza recently retired. On Monday this week, she appeared on the red carpet at the Laureus gala in Madrid, where reporters and photographers flocked around her.

Most of the questions were about what she will do in the future. But she was also confronted with ugly comments that have been directed at her. According to the Independent, a reporter is said to have said the following:

Confirms: Dumps

“People say you’ve stopped training, especially on social media people have attacked you for the shape you’re in…”

Writer and sports commentator Molly McElwee reacts in a comment at the Independent.

– Muguruza opened her eyes immediately. She was clearly taken to bed. Then she laughed. What else can you do to such a question with four microphones and many cameras up in your face? McElwee asks.

He sacrifices everything to pull off the stunt. Will it work?

Muruguza politely answered the question, saying that naturally the body will change when you are no longer a top level athlete and that the most important thing is to be healthy and fit.

– If I don’t train anymore, what then? I want to live life and enjoy it, she replied.

The clip has sparked a debate in Spain, where McElwee believes it is an unhealthy culture. She highlights, among other things, the episode where the then football president kissed the player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth after Spain won the World Cup gold last year.

– It is incredible that this has to be said, but don’t ask a woman how much she weighs. There were several men present at the gala too, I doubt they were asked about the weight. It is something only women have to deal with in sport, she writes.

Muguruza has been Spain’s best tennis player in the 2000s. Among other things, she has won the French Open and Wimbledon.
