Leverkusen’s record chase was about to come to a brutal halt.

The team, which has not lost a single game since the start of the season, could become the first ever European team with 49 straight games without a loss in European club football.

But Roma scored twice in the Europa League semi-final, and then Leverkusen were in a bad place in terms of the record.

At 2-0 to Roma, Leverkusen seemed to be headed for their first loss in a long time.

– A miracle

Nevertheless, Leverkusen recovered in an absolutely incredible way, and saved 2-2 at the very last minute.

First they turned around with an absurd own goal from Roma’s Gianluca Mancini, who headed in 2-1 in their own net.

Then came the 2-2 goal from Josip Stanisic six minutes into overtime. Then there was a chaotic celebration among the Leverkusen players.

When Leverkunsen was 2-1 down, they were already ready for the Europa League final, but they still threw players forward in the field in search of the incredible record.

– It’s an absurd scenario, said Viaplay commentator Eivind Bisgaard Sundet about the team that was ready for the final, but still put pressure on opponents Roma.

– We didn’t want to slow down the pace of the match. We wanted to remain undefeated, says Leverkusen player Granit Xhaka in an interview shown on Viaplay after the match.

When the record was secured, commentator Sundet hardly believed what he saw

– It is the flow zone of the times for Leverkusen. It is impossible to make mistakes. It’s a wonder – again. They are coming back for the hundredth time this season, said Bisgaard Sundet.

Almost a year without a loss

Coach Xabi Alonso has now managed Leverkusen for 348 days without a loss. The team has 40 wins and 9 draws in a season where they have already won the Bundesliga against all odds.

When Alonso took over Leverkusen almost two years ago, they were in the relegation zone in the Bundesliga, now they can win all the tournaments they participate in this season.

Leverkusen are ready for the Europa League final after 4-2 on aggregate against Roma.

– It really is an adventure. Some things are just fate. I think it is written in the stars that this Leverkusen team will be undefeated, says former England star Owen Hargreaves.
