The cross-country skier has made a big name in Sweden in recent years and now seems to have to take action to stop false articles being spread on social media.

It was the newspaper Expressen that first made the 24-year-old aware of the cases pending online. They showed her a screenshot of an article in which she is featured, where a photo of a blonde woman in a short dress is used and the face is censored. It is not Karlsson who is depicted, but the article wants it to appear that it is precisely the skier under censorship.

She herself reacts to the pictures.

– No, so boring. What can you do with something like that? This must be illegal, asks Karlsson Expressen’s journalist.

The person replies that it is possible to report the matter to the police, to which the skier replies that this is something she is likely to do. At the same time, she adds that she has been involved in similar activities in the past, then with fake accounts in her name.

More cases in Sweden

Expressen has previously discussed a similar case, with biathlete Stina Nilsson. She then encouraged reporting to the police, should this happen to others. The Swede was concerned that those behind it should not be allowed to make money from misusing other people’s names and images.

In this country, the Norwegian girls have not experienced the unpleasantness associated with being in public.

– I don’t know about the biggest profiles, but I don’t think this has been a problem in Norway, says Lotta Udnes Weng and continues:

– There are always pluses and minuses to being a big profile, so that’s something that comes with it, but it’s a shame that it goes so far that they have to go to the police. The Swedes need to get a hold of themselves and behave a little.

– Boring

She was one of the skiers who was selected for the elite national team ahead of a new season on Wednesday. It was also Kristin Austgulen Fosnæs, who stepped up from recruit.

The latter has made headlines in the media several times, but has so far avoided the back pages by a place in the spotlight. Laughingly, she points out that her name is not well known, but sympathizes with her Swedish competitors.

– It’s boring when things like this happen, I guess they would prefer to avoid it. I hope they have good people around them, who can help them cope, that’s probably the most important thing, says the 23-year-old.

In recent years, Therese Johaug, Marit Bjørgen and Heidi Weng have been the most talked about skiers on the women’s side in this country. It is only the latter who is still in the national team. In Sweden, however, there is a lot of demand for the current profiles. Expressen describes Karlsson as one of Sweden’s most talked about athletes.
