– We have observed and found the walrus Freya in good shape, writes communications adviser in the Directorate of Fisheries, Nadia Jdaini, in an SMS to VG.

The Directorate of Fisheries is looking at solutions to protect both people and animals, and thus prevent dangerous situations from occurring, Jdaini explains.

There is great curiosity about the walrus, and people seek her out. The Directorate of Fisheries tries to avoid situations with people close by, so they are waiting to reveal where she is at the moment.

– Now we keep watch to observe where she rests and where she grazes. The observations on Friday evening will be decisive for what is to be done next, says the SMS.

It was Aftenposten that first reported that Freya had been found.

Recently, the walrus has found its resting place in Frognerkilen in the Oslofjord. There, she has boarded leisure boats, as well as offered challenges to others who have traveled in the harbor area, but on Friday the Directorate of Fisheries had not, until now, observed the walrus.

On Saturday, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries will provide more detailed information about her whereabouts and possible measures. The boat Rind arrived in Oslo on Friday to find out where the walrus was.

The clear message from the Directorate of Fisheries is that people and boats must stay away from Freya.

– If a walrus is not allowed to be in peace, it can become stressed and scared. This can of course be a danger to life and health. If you keep your distance from the animal, both on land and in water, there is little chance of dangerous situations arising, says Jdaini.

The Directorate of Fisheries is preparing for a possible relocation of the walrus.

– Here we are in contact with professionals, including at the Institute of Marine Research, to find out how this can be done. We have not finished investigating the details of this, and we will provide information when any relocation process has been decided.
