The Fisheries Directorate’s vessel is heading towards Oslo to follow the walrus Freya, but first they have to find her.
On Thursday, the Directorate of Fisheries was able to state that they will send out the vessel “Rind” on Friday morning to prevent unwanted incidents and minor disturbances around Freya.
The aim is to inform and help people not get too close to the walrus.
Dangerous situations
The vessel, which has been sent from Egersund, arrives in Oslo on Friday afternoon. The problem is that the Directorate of Fisheries is not sure where the walrus is.
For the last few days, the celebrity walrus Freya has stayed in Frognerkilen in Oslo. Here she has had several spectators and many have come very close to the walrus.
Several potentially dangerous situations arose on Wednesday, including for a man on a kayak trip and a 17-year-old on a paddle board.
“Rind” arrives in Oslo at 1pm on Friday. They will then reconnoitre and find out where the walrus is moving now, says communications advisor Anette Aase.
They will therefore provide more information this afternoon.
Aase also informs that no decision has yet been made when it comes to moving the walrus.
Observed Thursday afternoon – but where is she now?
On Thursday around 18.00, VG published a video of a jet ski driving very close to the walrus. After that, no media reported that Freya had been observed.
Biologist Kjetil Isaksen has diligently followed the walrus over the past few days, but is also unsure of Freay’s position.
“I am not aware of any sightings of Freya either today or yesterday,” he writes in a text message to Aftenposten.
The walrus first appeared in Oslo on Sunday. She spent the night until Monday on a wharf at Kongen Marina. Later, she moved back and forth between wharves in Frognerkilen.
The pier guard in Frognerkilen’s boat association states that they do not know where Freya is. They haven’t seen her since Tuesday.
