– It feels sad, and it has been a long process for me. But I am also sure that this is right now, says Berg to Dagens Næringsliv.

She will not seek re-election to the Storting. Should she be re-elected as deputy leader at the party’s national meeting this weekend, she will resign from office already at the next national meeting, in the spring of 2025.

At Easter, she was asked by the nomination committee to think about a possible re-election for next year’s general election.

– I have done that, and the conclusion is the same. When I resign to the Storting, it will be natural and also step out of the party leadership. But I am highly motivated to work for the MDGs as an elected member of Parliament and as deputy leader for one more year – if the party wants, she says.

Will do something else

Berg says she is not giving up because of childhood or unrest in the party. She simply wants to do something else, she says.

– I had never dreamed of becoming a politician, and suddenly I became a city councilor in Oslo. Now after ten years, I feel that I owe it to myself to see what’s outside too, says Berg.

Many politicians on their way out

In August 2022, Une Bastholm announced that she was stepping down as MDG’s party leader, citing that she did not have the extra time and energy that was required.

Recently, a number of politicians have announced that they will not stand for re-election for four new years at the Storting. Among these are SV’s Kari Elisabeth Kaski and Audun Lysbakken, Frps Christian Tybring-Gjedde, Sps Jenny Klinge and Aps Torstein Tvedt Solberg to name a few.
