PGMOL chief Howard Webb tells Sky Sports.

– We are looking at it and are open to the possibility that it may be something we can use. It will be very useful for the referee to be able to speak to everyone in the stadium.

Today, spectators can only see a text poster on the big screens. It says whether it is checked for offside, penalty or red card, but they do not get any more details. Pictures of situations are not shown.

– There is room for improvement here, admits Webb.

Football’s International Law Committee (Ifab) has clear guidelines that discussions between referees cannot be broadcast live. For that reason, the English referees’ association envisages that the referees explain the decisions when they have assessed situations on the VAR monitor.

Such communication was used in last year’s women’s football World Cup. It has also been introduced in the MLS.

It is already known that the Premier League will introduce a semi-automatic offside system from next season. The technology is already used in the Champions League and Serie A.

– It will give faster decisions in many marginal offside situations, says head referee Webb.

The offside system will not be in place from the first league round in August, but the aim is to have it ready a few weeks into the season.
