DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (Nettavisen): The farmers’ organizations submitted their demands in this year’s agricultural settlement on Friday.

The claim, which is no less than 185 pages, shows, among other things, that the farmers are demanding NOK 101,500 in increased income.

– A juicy claim

The income before the claim is calculated at NOK 521,300, so the percentage increase in income is a whopping 19.5 per cent.

– This is a juicy demand, says Ivar Gaasland, associate professor at the Department of Social Economics at BI.

The increase of 101,500 is stated in the farmers’ own claim, where it is stated that the so-called must increase by 101,500. Then it is calculated with investments and . The farmers believe the real increase will be 82,900 per man-year. If this figure is taken into account, the increase in income will be 16.4 per cent.

Gaasland believes it is no coincidence that farmers are trying to come up with large income demands now.

– The farmers have their representatives in the government and then they try to make up the income gap in the two years that are left of this period, says Gaasland.

The income increase in the farmers’ demands is almost four times as high as the settlement in the export industry, the so-called frontline subjects. There they ended up at 5.2 percent. The front subject settlement sets a kind of standard for the rest of the salary settlements in Norway.

– The farmers are demanding very high wage supplements. Here they are really generous. Their plan is probably to continue next year while the farmers have their representatives centrally located in the government, says Gaasland.

The income gap

The leader of the farmers’ association would rather talk about kroner than percentages when the demand was presented.

– Bjørn Gimming, you are demanding a solid salary increase this year. The front subject’s frame is 5.2 per cent. What percentage increase do you require to have this year?

– This year we have a new numerical basis that aims to cover the income gap to other groups. So we are not starting from a percentage in this settlement, but to cover half of this income gap, says Gimming to Nettavisen.

– If you think you earn far too little, why only cover half the gap?

– In the government’s escalation plan, they say that the income gap must be closed by 2027, within three settlements. We believe it is urgent to get started on this and therefore demand half of this settlement, says Gimming.

– How will increased income ensure more eggs in the shops?

– It is absolutely crucial that the farmer is guaranteed a solid income if it is to be profitable to produce food. Raising income now will create confidence in the future, good recruitment and ensure Norwegian eggs and other agricultural products are on the shelves, he says.
