News, Police | The thief stole goods worth many thousands of kroner: – Incredibly boring for us who run a shop

NEST TUN: – We discovered that we had been subjected to theft when a customer came to us with an empty cardboard box that he had found in the car park. It came from our shop, and there had been some textiles in it, says general manager Thomas Nordal at Sport Outlet Nesttun.

Found the thief

The suspicious finding caused the employees in the store to go through the video from the surveillance camera, and there they could see that a person had picked up the carton in question and left the store.

– We contacted the security company and eventually the police also got involved, says Nordal.

The brazen theft happened at 12.30 on Wednesday afternoon.

The police confirm that they received a report of the theft on Wednesday afternoon, and a little later that day a man in his 30s was arrested.

– We were talking about such large amounts of money that we must be able to describe it as gross theft, says police station chief Ronny André Øvrebotten at Bergen south police station.

The first estimate was that the thief took clothes to the value of around NOK 50,000, but general manager Thomas Nordal tells Fanaposten that such large sums were not involved.

– Clothing worth many thousands was still taken, he says.

When the police arrested the man in his 30s, it was decided to search his home in central Bergen.

– There we found a lot of the stolen property which probably originated from the sports shop at Nesttun. The man had to spend the night in custody, before he was questioned on Thursday. After the questioning, he was allowed to go, but a criminal case will be opened into the matter, says Øvrebotten.

Good teamwork

General manager Thomas Nordal at Sport Outlet Nesttun says that thefts are unfortunately part of everyday life.

– This is something I am used to after 30 years in the industry. It’s going a little bit by leaps and bounds, but I notice that there has been an upswing in the number of thefts lately. It may have something to do with the financial situation many are in today. People like to have less to worry about, he says.

Nordal naturally thinks that it is boring that the store is exposed to theft, but he is happy that there was a quick resolution in this case.

– I have to praise both the security company and the police. Here there was good cooperation with the guards and the police which led to the thief being caught. We are of course very happy that the alert customer tipped us off about the empty carton that was lying in the car park, says Nordal.

The store manager says that they experience thefts from time to time, and that the employees must be vigilant.

– We try to take our precautions. All shoplifting is reported, and we see that there are a number of people who repeat themselves when it comes to theft, he says.
