Manager This is a leader. The editor expresses the newspaper’s position.

Twice in the space of a few days, several hundred kilos of boss have been dumped outside the environmental station of BIR south in the parking lot of Åsane storsenter’s A building. Bags of food waste, electronics, 60 kilos of dog food, kitchen utensils and exercise equipment are just some of what is thrown behind the green containers. Last week there were clear signs that birds or mice and rats had torn open the bags of food and dog food in the hope of a small treat. They certainly got that, and they probably told several of their rodent friends and bird friends that there is food to be had here.

The containers are set up so that private individuals can throw away glass, plastic packaging or cardboard and paper, but some people clearly give up completely and leave completely different things. This is probably to avoid the drive to Salhusveien, where you can sort the waste, and probably also to save NOK 50.

Instead, more people dump it behind the containers at, among other things, Åsane shopping centre, but also in several other places in the district, confident that others will clean up the rubbish. It is thoughtless, selfish, destructive and provocative.

By throwing away food waste in this way, you attract potential pests. Electronics, rubber, a tank of oil or paint cans are also something that is destructive to the environment. In addition, it must be removed. BIR steps in and sends the bill to us fellow Bergens.

Now the company’s communications advisor, Tina Skudal, confirms that the return point at Åsane shopping center is among the very worst when it comes to littering. Twice a week BIR’s employees have to clean at this station. That quickly adds up to many thousands of pounds. Skudal confirms that they are trying to find out who the culprits are and then send them the bill, but for now they do not know who is littering (probably at night).

The consequences are that BIR is considering removing environmental stations where there is frequent littering.

Now the containers at Åsane storsenter are not the only ones affected by littering. There have also been problems in Tertneskrysset and Eidsvåg.

Let’s hope the main culprits start to think hard about it. It is sad if you have to remove the containers, which are intended to contribute to increased environmental focus, because some people litter. It has happened several times before.
