In the previous forecast from Nortura, the shortfall was estimated at around 2,000 tonnes.

An average egg weighs 63 grams, which means that the undercoverage corresponds to over 46 million eggs, or over 7.6 million egg cartons containing six eggs, writes Nationen.

Norwegian egg production is expected to fall by one percent, while sales are expected to increase by two percent, according to Nortura.

– So far this year, about 1,200 tonnes of shell eggs have been imported. There is therefore room for an increase in production to meet the increased demand for eggs, writes Nortura Totalmarked in its new forecasts for the meat and egg market.

Earlier this year, the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture reduced the tariff for the import of eggs, but from 14 May the tariff has been removed completely. The customs freedom initially lasts until 24 June, according to the directorate.

Rema has already filled its shelves with Danish eggs.

The explanation for the egg shortage is higher demand, both from Norwegian consumers and abroad. Major disease outbreaks in Europe, together with the weak krone exchange rate, have meant that several players are buying more Norwegian eggs than they used to.
