Poor eyesight has probably traditionally been associated with older people, but recent figures from shows that this is not the case.

More and more young people are struggling with their eyesight, says a recent press release from the interest organisation.

It appears that 76 per cent of all Norwegians over the age of 15 use visual aids such as glasses or contact lenses.

Within this group, there has been a large increase among young adults who use aids to improve their vision.

More than half of those under 30 wear glasses or contact lenses, compared to around one in three in 2005.

In other words, there has been a large increase among young people who use aids to see better.

But what is the reason for that?

The natural reason would perhaps be that we look at screens more than 20 years ago, but according to Tina Alvær, general manager in the optician industry, the answer lies elsewhere.

– Research in this area indicates that children and young people have not necessarily had more problems with their vision, says Alvær to Nettavisen, before she continues:

– Today, vision problems are caught to a greater extent because we take vision and eye health more seriously now than a few years ago.

– Why?

– That is a good question. What we now see in the population is that people think that glasses are a little more stylish than they were before – especially among the younger people. We have also carried out several attitude campaigns, and both we and the chains are good at informing about this type of topic.

Older people swear by glasses

With some age groups, contact lenses are more popular, while others prefer glasses.

Well over 80 per cent of those over 75 wear glasses rather than contact lenses.

When it comes to adults under 50, many wear glasses and contact lenses in combination.
