Weather, Sun | Have to go back to 1990 for a similar Oslo day: – Abnormal

--

– This weather is not very normal.

That’s what state meteorologist Bente Wahl says about Saturday 4 May.

Today has been the warmest day in Oslo so far this year, with a scale showing 23.5 degrees.

To find the last time it was as hot as one of the first days in May, you have to go back a long way in time.

Actually a whole 34 years.

– WE have to go back to 1990 to find a day as hot or hotter this early in May, says the meteorologist.

Last day of summer

On 4 May 1990 it was 25.7 degrees in Oslo.

But today’s 23.5 is also far above what is normal:

– We have been 6.7 degrees above what is normal for the first few days of May.

Warm air masses from the south have entered Scandinavia.

But now it turns:

– It is probably the last day of summer for a while, and it will be different from tomorrow. The weather will be fine during the day today, says the meteorologist.

From cold to hot

Now the temperature will drop, and there will most likely be clouds and rain.

– It will be around 15 degrees instead of 23-24 as in the last few days.

It will remain like this next week as well: It will generally be cooler, and with chances of precipitation.

But that doesn’t mean it will be cold:

– Temperatures will be more normal. Rather, the last few days have been abnormally warm.

April, by comparison, has been abnormally cold.

– It is normal for us to get over 20 degrees in April, but we didn’t do that this year. So when the heat first came, it came really hard.

Not sure about May 17th

Even if the temperature will remain in the low 20s for the next few days, the sun will shine through, says Wahl.

And for the rest of May, anything can happen:

– May is a spring month, and there is quite a big difference between the beginning and the end of May. We can see a lot of high temperatures towards the end of the month.

Like last year, when it was 24 degrees on 31 May, for example.

Bente Wahl in the Meteorological Institute will not say anything about the 17 May weather yet:

– It’s far too long, and we don’t have those forecasts.
