On Saturday morning, Nicole Korzkenkova and her boyfriend Jack Larsen saw a cat in a cage at McDonald’s in the Kvadrat shopping center in Sandnes. Korzkenkova was just going to buy a coffee before work when she spotted the cat.

– The cage was full of faeces, everything indicated that the cat had been in the cage for a while, she tells Stavanger Aftenblad.

The couple first called the police and were told there was not much they could do. Then they decided to take matters into their own hands: They took the cat home with them.

– I had to go to work, so my mother bathed the cat. It was very hungry and tired when it arrived at our home.

Salsa – as in Chicken Salsa

Nicole is disappointed that someone could drop a cat locked in a cage.

– We were shocked and upset that someone put the cat out like this. She is a very kind and tame cat, she is just wild for food. It’s no wonder she looked completely starved, she says.

If no one reports the cat missing, the plan is for Nicole to keep the cat herself.

– We have already named her Salsa. Chicken Salsa is my favorite burger at McDonald’s. There will be a little look back at how we found her.

Salsa’s next step is a trip to the vet.

Do not drop the cat in the cage

The Lucas organization is one of several voluntary animal protection organizations in Rogaland. Adoption and animal manager, Ragna Marie Hamar says that they constantly receive reports about dumping of cats.

– This case was special since the cat was dumped so publicly. It’s too bad it was dumped in a cage. How will it then find food and water, asks Hamar.

Ragna Marie Hamar says that dumping takes place every year. Now Lucas's organization takes care of 60 abandoned cats.

Last year, a cat and her kitten were abandoned outside the door of the organization. She points out that cats that are put in cages are most often put in places where someone will find them.

Hamar has some tips for what you can do if you spot an abandoned cat:

– Everyone has a duty to help. The first thing you need to do is check if the cat is alive, and then take it to the vet. The vet has routines on what to do in such situations.
