Norway, Sweden and Finland agree to strengthen cooperation on so-called cross-border transport corridors in order to better take care of the countries’ joint military needs.

– The security policy situation following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Sweden’s and Finland’s entry into NATO makes it necessary to cooperate more closely with our Nordic neighbours, says Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård (Ap) in a press release.

– We share a border with both Sweden and Finland, and Norway is becoming important as both a receiving and transit area for military personnel and materiel. This places high demands on selected roads, bridges, railways, ports and airports, says Nygård.

He and the two transport minister colleagues agreed on the collaboration during a joint visit to the NATO exercise “Immediate Response” in Narvik this week.

The agreement includes, among other things, strengthening cooperation to support military mobility between the countries. In addition, they will examine the basis for a Nordic strategy for the long-term development of cross-border connections, based on each country’s strategic transport plans.

The third point in the cooperation agreement is that all players, from strategic to operational level, must cooperate and practice regularly.
