Indøk tops the list in terms of the total number of applicants, but the new aircraft mechanic education has fierce competition for its 25 study places.
Today, the applicant numbers from Samordna admissions for 2024 were presented.
23,888 applicants have applied to NTNU as their first choice for higher education this year. NTNU reports this in a press release.
New enrollment figures: More will become nurses, but fewer will become teachers
This means that around one in six applicants for higher education have NTNU as their first priority.

Technology subjects are increasing
This year there is a significant increase in applicants for technological subjects, with around one in five applicants nationwide having a technology education in their application. At NTNU, applications for technology studies have increased by just over 11 per cent.
– In general, we expect to have well-qualified applicants for the bulk of our studies, and we see that this year too there is great interest in applying to our technology studies, including the civil engineering programmes. It is gratifying, says Marit Reitan, vice-chancellor for education at NTNU in the press release.
In addition to good numbers of applicants for several technology studies in Trondheim, NTNU reports an increase in applicants for engineering studies in both Ålesund and Gjøvik.
NTNU starts Norway’s only aeronautical engineering programme
– We are naturally very happy with that. It is also gratifying that we have so many applicants for the new aircraft engineering education in Trondheim, says Reitan about the education, which has 453 applicants for 25 places.
Fresh education on the national top list
The brand new education also makes it onto a national top list. With 18.1 applicants per study place, it is in fifth place in the overview of the most applicants in relation to the number of study places. In other words, there will be fierce competition.
Today’s minister for research and higher education, Oddmund Hoel, was state secretary when former minister Ola Borten Moe announced the new NTNU education. Hoel highlighted the success story when he presented the national enrollment figures.
– It is incredibly fun to see how many people have applied for the newly created line. It is a need that both the military and the civilian sector have a great need for. It is great that young people are interested and this is an important part of Norway’s preparedness, said the minister.
Uneven application to teacher training courses
On a national basis, the number of applicants to teacher training programs decreased, which has been the case for several years. It also did so at NTNU.
Reitan nevertheless points out that certain study programs within the teacher education programs increased at NTNU.
– We see an increase in applicants for primary school teacher 1.-7. level and, in addition, an increase in several vocational teacher programmes. Overall, we have a smaller decline in applicants to the teacher education courses overall than the national average. It is positive. For many of the lecturer programmes, we unfortunately see a decline, and that is worrying, says Reitan.
Want more applicants for nursing
After there was a drop in the number of applicants to health subjects across the country in 2022, the number of applicants has now stabilized. Reitan believes that NTNU will also be able to fill the places with qualified applicants next autumn.
– We see good numbers of applicants for the medical education at the Gjøvik campus, and for health subjects in general. At the same time, we would like more applicants for special nursing care on some of our campuses, says Reitan.
Within social sciences and humanities, Reitan believes that NTNU has reason to be satisfied with the applicant numbers. The exception is the language subjects, which have a significant decrease in the number of applicants.
