Mercedes USA has announced the new 2025 G Series.

Updated, 1:13 p.m.:

“The electric model offers a range of up to 473 kilometers and is distinguished by impressive off-road characteristics, including the innovative G-TURN function,” explains Mercedes in the Norwegian press release – it is also revealed that the car can soon be ordered in this country:

– With its eternal charm and character, the G-Class has dominated both roads and paths for 45 years. Now, Mercedes-Benz takes the icon further into the electric age, with ground-breaking technology and off-road capabilities that satisfy the demands of any G-Class enthusiast. We expect great interest when we soon open up orders for our legendary model in new electric guise, says Thorbjørn Myrhaug, director of Mercedes-Benz Norway, at Bertel O. Steen.

“Protection under the car is essential for all off-road vehicles, and on an electric vehicle it is crucial that the battery is not damaged if the vehicle hits an object. Therefore, the protective plate is designed to provide a high level of protection. The undercarriage protection is constructed from an advanced material mix that includes carbon, which not only extends its life, but also contributes to weight savings. The protective panel is 26 millimeters thick, weighs 57.6 kg and is solidly attached to the frame structure with 50 steel screws. In comparison, a corresponding component made of steel would weigh around three times more, which underlines the effectiveness of the choice of materials in the new electric G-Class,” says the recent press release.

Camera reveals from all angles

There are two models that have already been announced: the G 550 and an AMG edition in the form of the G 63: “Settle in to experience the new OFFROAD COCKPIT, mission control to cross rough terrain. Here you get the most relevant information for off-road driving such as vehicle positioning, height and steering angle, and the new “Transparent” Hood” function uses the 360-degree camera for a virtual display of obstacles below the vehicle,” Mercedes boasts of the two relatively new models.

But Mercedes has more in store in the form of a G580 edition (which they have clumsily dubbed “G580 with EQ technology”) which has 4 wheel motors and “G-turn” – the car was just shown during a show in Las Vegas. Rivian (we just tested the R1T) wanted to implement it but ditched it, and the Cybertruck’s rear wheels can pivot slightly to make it easier to operate the big pickup in tight spaces – Mercedes takes it further, because the 580 can stand still and rotate 360 degrees , like a tank. It’s not entirely new, but the combination of good off-road capabilities, style and luxury has made the G series an icon.

The G580 can also climb up to a 100 percent 45º pitch and maintain stability on side slopes of up to 35º and wade in 0.85m deep water. We do not know when the model will arrive in Norway, nor the range, but we do know it can reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and offers a top speed of 180 km/h. The battery is 116kWh, and it charges from 10 to 80 per cent in 32 minutes with 200kW max. It is also supplied with “D-auto”, which ensures that it brakes with regenerative power in relation to the traffic situation.
