(Nettavisen) The owner of a detached house in east Oslo was to install a new battery in the smoke detector on Monday. But the battery was inserted the wrong way. Within minutes it short-circuited and the smoke detector caught fire.
The result was a large burn mark on the ceiling and a completely melted smoke alarm. Fortunately, a major fire was averted.
Extinguished the fire himself
The owner of the detached house put out the fire himself, says the Oslo Fire and Rescue Service, which moved out with a crew to make sure that everything was in order and that the person in question had not inhaled smoke.

– Even with the best intentions, things can go wrong. This is a good reminder of how important it is to insert the battery correctly, says incident leader Bjørn-Kristian Bratlie of the Oslo Fire and Rescue Service to Nettavisen.
– If you have smoke detectors without a battery pad or similar that ensures that the battery is inserted correctly, you must be careful when inserting a new battery. In addition to the owner discovering the fire himself, another smoke detector also warned that there was a fire. This is also a good example of how important it is to have more smoke detectors, says Bratlie.
If you do not have a smoke detector with a battery pad, you must be careful when inserting a new battery, is the advice from the fire service. Also remember that if you have smoke detectors that are older than 10 years, you should replace them.
