The Ragnar Ulstein monument was unveiled at Ulstein town hall in 2016. Since then, the Ulstein Men’s Chorus has marked Liberation Day annually with a ceremony and men’s choir. Last year, the veterans from the municipalities on Søre Sunnmøre also joined the commemoration in Ulstein and then as common for this region.

Ulstein municipality writes on its website in connection with the commemoration that Ragnar Ulstein was a war veteran, author and war historian. He interviewed many witnesses, including those who returned home as veterans. Ulstein has well documented how the Second World War also affected people from our part of the country. Without Ulstein’s thorough war history work, important history from our recent past could have been lost.

The municipalities in Søre Sunnmøre now have a joint action plan for veterans. 8 May is also chosen as Veteran’s Day and the municipalities and veterans have found to join their men’s choir at the event in Ulstein. The oldest surviving veterans served in the German Brigade and international peace service.

Since the beginning of the commemoration, it has been important that young people are included in the peace commemoration and this has been done by inviting the annual Russian president in Ulstein to hold an appeal. This year, Andrea Skaar Berg will be responsible for this.

Veterans and relatives from Søre Sunnmøre are especially invited. The municipality, NVIO (Norwegian Veterans’ Association for International Operations), Sunnmøre branch, and NROF (Norwegian Reservists’ Association) Søre Sunnmøre branch support the event.

Towards the end of the event, area manager of HV, Hans Ole Låbakk, will offer a greeting.

In connection with the event, a military guard of honor and veterans will be stationed at the monument.
