NRK received a complaint about weather forecaster Siri Wiberg’s choice of clothing

The weather report on Friday 12 January apparently caused shock and disbelief for one of Dagsrevyen’s regular viewers.

“Both me and my partner were mildly shocked by weather forecaster Siri Wiberg, she wasn’t wearing anything pink,” writes the viewer in a complaint sent to the Broadcasting Council.

“This has been something that we have gathered around, as we have guessed what or where she is wearing pink at the next weather report”, continues the complainant.

The case was never dealt with by the Broadcasting Council, but Medier24 made direct contact with weather forecaster Siri Wiberg, to find out what was the background for the controversial choice not to wear pink.

– Is it serious? Does it really work? This cannot be very serious. But it’s really funny that it engages what I’m wearing on TV, is Wiberg’s immediate reaction.

– I might not think that I wear pink every time I’m on TV. But I like to choose sometimes, so it happens that I choose something that is not pink, she continues and laughs.

That Wiberg likes pink is a poorly hidden secret.

On Instagram, she calls herself the pink_weathergirl, and when NRK made a journey through the weather year in 2017, viewers got to witness both her pink car and her decorating for a pink Christmas.

– I have not always been pink. It probably started seven years ago when I moved away from my husband. I was going to buy a new car and I really wanted a pink car. Don’t know why, but thought it was cool. I spent all the holiday money on foiling the car pink.

– Maybe a bit of a mid-forties crisis, she adds, laughing.

The meteorologist says that she also has a pink sofa, toaster and pink kitchen items.

– Almost everything I have is pink. I also had a pink microwave, but it broke then.

At one point, she also appeared with pink hair on the live broadcast, when she was supposed to report the weather.

Wiberg says that NRK has a little say in terms of how she should look and what she should look like. They are the ones who buy the clothes she wears on TV, explains the meteorologist.

– The time I colored it pink, I didn’t ask NRK in advance. I just dyed it pink and then went to work on it. Then they came to me and said: “We’ll see how it goes”.

NRK is also said to have told that if there was a lot of fuss and attention about it, they believe that it will take attention away from what the meteorologist will be doing on TV, she explains.

If it didn’t, then it was fine, was the message from NRK according to Wiberg.

– Then about a week passed, and then they came again and said: “There was a bit of a commotion. It’s nice if you take it away,” says Wiberg and laughs.

– It was fun while it lasted.

Guaranteed good weather on 17 May

As a meteorologist, Wiberg is very careful not to say anything firm about what the weather will be like.

She learned that the hard way when she had to forecast the weather for 17 May in a newspaper in Southern Norway many years ago – then as a fairly new meteorologist.

– It is a day that is very important in terms of weather for many people. Then I guaranteed good weather on 17 May. Using a word like “guarantee” on a day like this is a bit scary.

Wiberg says that there was high pressure and the weather was supposed to be fine. But then sea fog came in towards Sørlandet.

It resulted in dizziness, all day.

– It became a big deal where the meteorologist had a guaranteed weather forecast – but it didn’t happen. Since then, I have never guaranteed anything, laughs Wiberg.
