– Works in ten minutes

New erection gel works in ten minutes, lures the manufacturer. – There are free and easier ways, says the GP.

Norwegian men regularly go to GPs around Norway with erection problems. Many have heart and vascular diseases that affect the blood vessels, and thus also the blood vessels around the penis. Or they experience a drop in testosterone levels.

– Testosterone levels gradually fall in all men. More people have problems with erection as they get older, says GP, researcher and author Siri Dalsmo Berge.

In the sexual habits survey from 2020, 20 percent reported erectile problems.

Aids against erectile dysfunction are part of the pharmacies. The most famous is Viagra. But Viagra has a drawback: It must be taken one hour before intercourse.

Then there is little room for spontaneity. But now a gel has arrived that the manufacturer believes can solve this exact problem.

“Hard enough for sex”

According to the manufacturer’s press release, the gel works by starting the natural process to get an erection.

“Eroxon gel is applied glossy to the head of the penis. The gel evaporates in seconds and has a fast cooling and slow heating effect. The nerve endings in the penis are stimulated, and this results in increased blood flow which helps to get an erection that is hard enough for sex/intercourse.”

When Aftenposten called GP and cohabitation therapist Siri Dalsmo Berge to ask about the new gel, her first reaction was curiosity.

– Immediately I think “is it too good to be true, or could it be true?”

She explains:

– As I understand it, the mechanism is that you heat up the head of the penis, get an increased blood supply that gives an erection. But could you get the same effect by heating up the penis in other ways? There are some free ways to do that, she says.

– Don’t have too high expectations.

The manufacturer of the erection gel refers to clinical studies where the cream helped to get an erection within 10 minutes, both in mild, moderate and severe erectile dysfunction.

But the studies have been small. In one, 250 men participated, in the other study only 47 men participated.

General practitioner Dalsmo Berge thinks the data base in the studies referred to in the manufacturer’s press release is small. She points out that there were few participants and of those who did, only a small proportion, 60-70 per cent, reported an effect.

She is also critical of the fact that the gel has not been tested against other products or can document the type of erectile dysfunction it works best for.

– This is not a revolutionary thing, when it has been tested on so few.

But at the same time, she says that the gel has few side effects and a low price.

– It does not seem to be that dangerous to try, but one must not have too high expectations.

– Safe alternative

The manufacturer writes to Aftenposten that the results of the studies are based on more than 3,000 partners. And that the proportion that had an effect from the product is roughly at the same level as for other medicines for erectile dysfunction.

– On the other hand, Eroxon worked much faster and had far fewer side effects, writes specialist manager Astrid T. Bratvedt in Navamedic. They refer to the product as a safe alternative to other products on the market.

– Eroxon can also be used by men who for medical reasons cannot use oral drugs for erectile dysfunction.

Do you have erection problems? Then it’s a good idea to visit the GP to check if it is connected to another illness, and to get help, says GP Dalsmo Berge.

– If you choose to buy and try it, you may be lucky and maybe it will work a little. But it may also not work, she tells Aftenposten.
