The chairman of the Mosaic community is enthusiastic about the idea of a public Hanukkah celebration, writes Vårt Land.

This year, the Muslim holiday of Ramadan is marked with luminous crescents outside Oslo City Hall. It is the first time the municipality is responsible for such a public marking of a non-Christian religious holiday. Now there may be more of it in the years to come.

Vårt Land has asked the city council leader if it is appropriate to arrange a similar celebration for a Jewish holiday. He is open to that:

– If there is an inquiry about this, for example from the Mosaic community, we are happy to discuss how we can make it happen, writes Solberg in an email to Vårt Land.

Ronen Bahar, chairman of the Mosaic Community, is enthusiastic about the idea.

– It is most relevant for Hanukkah, he says.

The Jewish festival of lights Hanukkah is celebrated in memory of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the year 165 or 164 before Christ. It varies when the eight-day party starts, but it is mostly in December and occasionally in late November.
