A new standard for charging speed

Twice a year, NAF and Motor test the range and charging speed of the electric cars on the Norwegian market in the world’s largest electric car test El Prix. All the cars are tested on the same day under the same conditions, so that the range and charging speed of the electric cars can be compared as evenly and fairly as possible. This year, the summer test took place on 6 and 7 June, and even before the test started, rumors began to circulate that a new charging record could be set.

Now we can reveal that the XPENG G9, the new premium SUV from XPENG, has broken a new charging record with an impressive 319 kW. This beats all the other cars that took part in this year’s test, and beat the old record by a whopping 48 kW. With this, the test car set a new standard for charging speed, and charged the 98 kWt battery from 5 to 80 percent in just 21 minutes.

Miles ahead of the competition

There were a total of 33 participating cars in the test, which made this the most comprehensive test for NAF and Motor ever. With competitors from traditional manufacturers as well as several newcomers, it is no small achievement that the XPENG G9 delivers a new charging record. A record that is significantly higher than the nearest competitor, and far higher than the majority of the other test cars.

The range is better than promised

In addition, the G9 delivered an impressive range during the test of 587.8 kilometers, a full 67.8 kilometers better than the WLTP figure which gave a test-winning difference of a whopping 13 percent. The car drove for a full 11 hours before it finally stopped.

The P7 also impresses

In addition to the premium SUV G9, XPENG presented the sports sedan P7, which has been significantly upgraded with a longer range and higher charging speed. The P7 also delivered very convincing results and achieved a charging power of 189 kW, well above the official power of 175 kW. This means that the car was charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 25 minutes. Like the G9, the P7 went quite a bit further than the WLTP range, achieving a result of 557 kilometers. It was a whopping 10.3 per cent more than the stated range, which resulted in a second place in this parameter.

Pleased to receive confirmation from NAF

For the Norwegian manager of XPENG, Claes Persson, it was very gratifying that the cars delivered a high charging speed and an impressive range, and that, as many predicted in advance, it became a new charging record.

– We had great faith that the G9 would set a new charging record during this year’s El Prix, but we were still excited about whether the results of the NAF were in line with what the car performed in our internal tests. When the facts are finally available, we are very satisfied, and it is really gratifying to finally be able to speak out loud that the G9 is the best in terms of charging speed. We take it as a nice bonus that both the G9 and P7 deliver a much stronger range than the WLTP figures indicate, says Persson

XPENG has high ambitions, and spends a lot of resources on being the market leader in innovative electric car technology. After being in Norway for a few years, the brand is clear about where its ambitions lie in the future.

– This is where we should be. XPENG invests formidable amounts annually in research and development to create cars that set new standards. Now we finally have the result which shows that the newcomer has become the best in the class, concludes Persson.
