“This is the most fun you can drive now!” wrote Motor with considerable enthusiasm about the Toyota GR Yaris as recently as December, from a test drive characterized by good, old-fashioned driving pleasure. See that case at the bottom of the article.

The car we played with in December cost NOK 690,000. Now the price of the successor is clear, and the list looks like this:

The prices are without shipping and delivery costs – and for the record also without winter tires or other options.

Motor has asked Toyota’s information manager: Why such a sharp price increase?

– The car has received extensive changes and increased engine power. The Circuit pack is now standard. The fees have also been increased significantly, replies Espen Olsen.

New optional box

In the press release, Toyota writes that the car’s three-cylinder engine was the most powerful in the world when it arrived. Now, however, new steps have been taken, with a further 19 hp and 30 Nm in torque – to 280 hp and 390 Nm respectively.

The biggest change, according to Toyota, is not included in the purchase. There is a new eight-speed automatic transmission, “GAZOO Racing Direct”. A six-speed manual gearbox is still standard.

The “Circuit package” has thus become standard equipment, as Olsen points out. This concerns an additional radiator, as well as a new intercooler with water spray system and modified air intake.

More glue and laser

Toyota has made various changes inside the car, particularly with regard to better visibility and a more sporty feel. In addition, 13 percent more laser welds and 24 percent more structural glue during construction will make the body more rigid.

Toyota believes this will provide both better driving characteristics and better road grip.

The Finns’ young rally world champion Kalle Rovanperä lends his name to the most expensive variant. Then you get, among other things, a “Kalle mode”, based on the rally driver’s preferences. That is to say… “one” does not get this, one get such a car. Toyota Norge has only got its hands on one copy, and it has already been sold.

Da Motor voted “Best car purchase of the year” last yearthe Toyota GR Yaris ran away with the win in the open class.

“Has everything it takes to please those who have capitulated to electric cars out of sheer reason, but who never forget how much fun it once was to drive a car,” wrote Øivind A. Monn-Iversen, test manager at Motor.

– Do you stand by this, even after the price increase?

– I’m tempted to answer yes, the car has definitely become even more fun. But the changes do not justify a price increase of several hundred thousand kroner. So the answer must be no, says Monn-Iversen.
