VW ID.7 – Here is the Volkswagen ID.7: Check that range!

(Elbil24): We are led into a room where there will be simple serving. We were to wait to see an unnamed model from VW – a new electric car. Is it any wonder we were excited? The incident took place in Los Angeles, at the same time as the LA Auto Show was canceled late this fall.

This car, on the other hand, was so secret that it was not shown at the fair, but in a separate closed room for a small group of invited guests. The public will first get to see it during the CES fair, which opens in Las Vegas these days.

WE were told to wait, then we would see the car. And we waited. And waited.

In the end we had to take a walk and look around, because where did this car end up? Outside a door, a uniformed man sat on a stool, and we had to ask. – Shouldn’t a car be shown here today?

Well then, it’s inside the door here, so just wait, we were told. And we waited. It was now late at night, and we were waltzing around like 24-hour zombies. Finally we walked firmly towards the door and said now we want to see. It uniformed so presumably that we meant business, and we let ourselves in. There it stood, glowing at us in a camouflage the likes of which we have never seen before. It glittered like a Christmas tree in all the colors of the rainbow. Yes, then. We saw the shape and form, and immediately understood what it was: Volkswagen ID.7.

Sixth at MEB

First came the compact ID.3. Then came the ID.4, a medium-sized SUV that has managed to become a real Norwegian favourite. It rolls off more than 20,000 on Norwegian roads.

Later also came the coupé version of the ID.4, which was named the ID.5. The electric public transport bus ID. Buzz arrived in December, and just managed to be named Car of the Year. The ID.6 is the fifth from VW to be built on the MEB platform, but it only runs in China.

VW ID.7 will be the sixth. This will be a kind of big brother to the ID.5, and it is very reminiscent of the ID concept car. Aero, which Elbil24 got to see last summer:

The ID.7 can also be referred to as a combi version of the upcoming station wagon ID. Space Vizzion, if you will. We saw it as late as December.

However, it was not the first meeting. We also saw it in Los Angeles already in 2019, just before the pandemic kicked off in full. However, it was not camouflaged, despite the fact that this has not yet come on the market either. This is how the unveiling of it looked like:

Completely cynical, the station wagon is probably a better alternative in Norway, where we primarily want an SUV, but can live with a station wagon if necessary. The sedan or combi models are not really that popular among us who have to carry both bike and skis with us everywhere, preferably at the same time.

VW says that the flashing car in front of us has over 40 layers of paint to encapsulate everything that makes it flash. More important is what it actually consists of, because we already know that it is based on the MEB platform. Then we also know the pieces it is made of.

See what resurrects!

When VW says that it has a wheelbase of 2.97 metres, we also know that it is the long version of the MEB platform. Thus, we know that there is enough space between the axles to house the large battery, which agrees well with the range VW estimates for the ID.7. It should be able to cope with up to 700 kilometres, measured according to the WLTP method.

As of now, there is only the long version of ID. Buzz, which will also be equipped with this length, and we know that there will be a battery of around 100 kWh at the most. It is still natural that the ID.7 goes further on this battery than the Buzz, as it has completely different aerodynamics. Hence the aforementioned 700 kilometres.

Inside, it is easy to recognize from the other ID cars. There is still more space, and it has a larger screen of a whopping 15 inches, measured diagonally.

The user interface and other functions are limited by the possibilities within the software VW has created for the MEB cars, so most things will be relatively familiar to those who have had an ID car before. The car will also get the head-up display, which will show information on large parts of the windscreen, and it will get a new control for the air conditioning, which will now be on the cover image, without you having to go into a new screen to find what you want .

The European edition of the ID.7 will be produced in Emden, side by side with the ID.4. It is therefore the sixth car out of the ten fully electric cars VW has said will be on the market by 2026.

The car will very likely appear on the market next year, i.e. in 2024. We will return with more information as soon as we get it.
