Ikea, Department store | Here is Ikea’s new big venture

KARL JOHAN, OSLO (Nettavisen): We got a sneak peek at Ikea’s new major investment in the center of Oslo. Ikea confirms to Nettavisen that the opening date will be 30 May at 10 a.m. There will be a grand opening with a DJ, and Ikea is preparing to welcome large crowds.

This is something completely different from the so-called planning studios that Ikea has in a number of cities.

Kitchen equipment and furniture

This is a department store where 1,000 products are on display, including kitchens, sofas, chairs, shelves, frying pans and other kitchen equipment. You can buy 600 of the 1,500 items from the store.

The items you can buy in the shop are smaller in size. You can’t take a bed or a large wardrobe with you from here.

– But we also have flat-packed, smaller furniture here, says Thoresell.

She states that the largest piece of furniture is a trolley table. But otherwise you can order everything from Ikea’s catalog in the store.

Cafe and shop

The new department store is located next to Karl Johansgate, close to Stortorget. It covers two levels and 1,000 square meters.

There is also a cafe in the department store and there will also be a separate “food shop” where you can buy frozen pizza, meatballs, Swedish juice and jam.

– We expect at least 1,000 visitors on the first day, says Hanna Thorsell.

– It looks like it will be a while until everything is ready, and there are not many days until the opening. Are you sure it will be ready?

– Absolutely, I am absolutely sure of that. There is a large group of people who work for everything to be ready on time, says Thorsell.

Take action to prevent queues

– What do you do to prevent queues at the tills?

– We have spread out boxes in several places in the room. There are ten boxes in total.

– Are you confident that people will not have to wait long at the tills?

– I am super sure of that. We have long experience with this, says Thorsell.

The premises are located in the middle of Smørøyet in Oslo, and in this area there are some of the highest rental prices.

The start in Norway

Ikea has had an adventurous growth since its inception in 1943. In Norway, the first store opened at Nesbru in Asker in 1963.

In 1975, the first large department store opened not too far away, in Slependen. Also that in Asker.

Today Ikea has seven large warehouses from Kristiansand in the south to Trondheim in the north. In addition, they have eight so-called planning studios.
